The International Youth Skills Day is observed annually on 15 July. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 2014 through resolution A/RES/69/145 to emphasize the importance of developing professional and life skills among youth as a foundation for decent work, entrepreneurship, and participation in society.

Goal of the day
The primary aim is to draw attention to the importance of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), as well as the challenges young people face when entering the labor market. It is also an opportunity to showcase best practices, innovations, and initiatives in youth skills development.

Why is it important?
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), youth aged 15 to 24 are three times more likely to face unemployment than adults. Meanwhile, millions of young people lack access to quality education and vocational training, which hinders their self-realization and the sustainable development of society as a whole.

Key themes addressed on this day:

* the need to ensure equal access to vocational training
* adapting educational programmes to the requirements of the digital economy
* supporting women and girls in technical and engineering professions
* collaboration between governments, the private sector, and educational institutions
* sustainable development through preparing young talent for the “green” jobs of the future

How is International Youth Skills Day observed?
Many countries hold:

* international and national conferences
* webinars and online discussions
* demonstrations of successful vocational training projects
* awareness campaigns about the importance of skills
* events in schools, colleges, and training centres

The UN, UNESCO, UNICEF, and other organisations actively use this day to promote global dialogue and strengthen partnerships in the interests of youth.

The role of skills in a sustainable future
Youth skills are not only tools for earning income but also means to strengthen civic engagement, digital literacy, tolerance, and inclusion. Skill development allows young people to better adapt to the challenges of our time and contribute to innovation, climate solutions, and sustainable growth.

Conclusion
International Youth Skills Day is a reminder that investing in youth education and training is an investment in a sustainable and just future. It calls on the global community to create conditions in which every young person can realize their potential, regardless of gender, background, or place of residence.
